One of the world's great cities it has stood as a major centre of population for almost two thousand years and has been the capital (mainly) for 1800 years. Formerly the epicentre of the British Empire and the world's busiest port, London still maintains a position as one of the world's biggest centres of trade and commerce. Home to historical buildings by the score and the worlds most famous Royal Family it is also home to the worlds oldest parliamentary system. For all its heritage London is very much a modern city and trend-setter in the worlds of music, fashion and the arts. For the visitor there is too much to enjoy on a brief visit so make the most of your time there by planning carefully. Most of the major attractions are tightly packed, the transport systems may be crowded but it is comparatively easy to get around either by underground train (the tube) or bus.

Portobello Film Festival - August. After Edinburgh and London, Portobello must be the third biggest Film Festival in UK. The Film Festival was created in 1996 as a reaction to the moribund state of the British film industry, to provide a forum for new film-makers and give exposure to movies on different formats.

Notting Hill Carnival - August. Notting Hill in West London may seem a long way from the Caribbean, but during the final weekend of August, its streets erupt with the supercharged noise and colour of carnival with crowds in excess of 2 million. Second only to Rio in its scope, the Notting Hill Carnival has grown since 1964 from a minor celebration to become the biggest street carnival in Europe.

Mayor's Thames Festival - September. Launched in 1997 with an amazing high wire walk across the Thames, the Mayor's Thames Festival has grown to become the capital’s largest free, open-air arts festival that now attracts over 470,000 people each year. The festival showcases high-profile, cutting-edge arts events on and around the river, and also offers the best in street arts, with pyrotechnics, illuminations, art installations, river events, street theatre, massed choirs, circus and music.
